    Summary

    Prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) did not demonstrate gastrointestinal cytoprotection or alter blood flow in swine models. These findings suggest PGF2 alpha is neither vasoconstrictive nor cytoprotective at submaximal doses.

    Background:

    • Prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) is considered a vasoconstrictor.
    • Its potential for gastrointestinal cytoprotection is debated, with conflicting evidence regarding its effect on mucosal blood flow.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of intravenous PGF2 alpha on gastrointestinal blood flow in anesthetized miniature swine.
    • To assess the impact of PGF2 alpha on gastric mucosal blood flow and stress ulceration during hemorrhagic shock.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized a miniature swine model under chloralose anesthesia.
    • Employed the radiolabeled microsphere technique to determine blood flow.
    • Administered varying doses of PGF2 alpha intravenously and induced hemorrhagic shock.

    Main Results:

    • PGF2 alpha significantly decreased myocardial blood flow at all tested doses.
    • Gastrointestinal blood flow showed a non-significant trend toward decrease with the highest PGF2 alpha dose.

    • Submaximal doses of PGF2 alpha were neither vasoconstrictive nor cytoprotective in this model.
    • The role of mucosal blood flow in prostaglandin-mediated cytoprotection warrants further investigation.
