Geriatric rigidity and its psychotherapeutic implications.

T L Brink

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society

    Summary

Elderly rigidity, often seen as negative, can paradoxically help prevent depression and anxiety by channeling thoughts and reinforcing self-help behaviors. Psychotherapy should work with, not against, this rigidity.

    Area of Science:

    • Geriatric Psychology
    • Psychotherapy Research

    Background:

    • Older adults often exhibit greater personality rigidity compared to younger individuals.
    • This rigidity is frequently associated with poorer psychological adjustment.

    Observation:

    • Rigidity is not a direct cause of poor adjustment but an attempted coping mechanism.
    • Specific rigid lifestyle patterns include pessimism, suspicion, self-reliance, and determination.

    Findings:

    • Rigidity can effectively channel thoughts, preventing rumination that leads to depression and anxiety.
    • Rigid patterns can simultaneously reinforce self-help behaviors in the elderly.

    Implications:

    • Geriatric psychotherapy should adopt a problem-centered approach, avoiding direct confrontation of rigidity.
    • Techniques like behavioral modification and motivational slogans can leverage existing rigidity to enhance coping abilities.
