    Summary

    This study found that simple allergy tests couldn't identify a specific atopic subgroup in patients with nasal polyps. However, positive house dust mite skin tests may guide future hyposensitization evaluations.

    Background:

    • Nasal polyps are inflammatory growths in the nasal cavity.
    • Allergy is often implicated in the development of nasal polyps.
    • Identifying atopic status in patients with nasal polyps is clinically relevant.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence of allergic features in patients with simple nasal polyps.
    • To determine if simple allergy tests can identify a specific atopic subgroup within this patient population.

    Main Methods:

    • Interviewed 74 consecutive patients with simple nasal polyps regarding allergy symptoms.
    • Performed skin testing with various antigenic extracts.
    • Measured peripheral blood immunoglobulins, including total serum IgE.

    Main Results:

    • Simple allergy tests did not successfully delineate a specific atopic subgroup among patients with nasal polyps.
    • Positive skin test results to house dust mite extract were observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Current simple allergy testing methods are insufficient to define a distinct atopic subgroup in simple nasal polyps.
    • Positive skin reactivity to house dust mite may warrant further investigation for hyposensitization therapy.
