    Summary

    Aplastic anemia patients show reduced lymphocytes and monocytes. While immunoglobulin levels are mostly normal, these immune cell changes may contribute to infection risk alongside neutropenia.

    Background:

    • Aplastic anemia is a rare bone marrow failure disorder.
    • Infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in aplastic anemia patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the peripheral blood immune cell profile in aplastic anemia patients.
    • To assess serum immunoglobulin levels in aplastic anemia.

    Main Methods:

    • Peripheral blood counts of total lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and monocytes were analyzed in 29 patients.
    • Serum immunoglobulin levels were quantified in 22 patients.

    Main Results:

    • A significant decrease in mean numbers of total lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and monocytes was observed.
    • Serum immunoglobulin levels were normal in the majority of patients studied.

    Conclusions:

    • Peripheral blood immune cell alterations, including lymphopenia and monocytopenia, are present in aplastic anemia.
    • These immunological changes may play a role in the increased susceptibility to infections in aplastic anemia, in addition to neutropenia.
