    Summary

This study details rabbit eye lesions caused by Cryptococcus neoformans, mimicking human cases. Cryptococcal polysaccharide antigen testing proved most sensitive for detecting the fungal infection in eye tissues.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Mycology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Cryptococcus neoformans can cause serious eye infections, including endophthalmitis.
    • Understanding the pathogenesis and developing animal models are crucial for studying these infections.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To establish and characterize an experimental rabbit model of hematogenous cryptococcal endophthalmitis.
    • To investigate the clinical, pathological, and microbiological features of ocular cryptococcosis in rabbits.

    Main Methods:

    • New Zealand white rabbits were intracarotidly injected with Cryptococcus neoformans.
    • Ocular lesions were monitored clinically and pathologically.
    • Cultures and cryptococcal polysaccharide antigen (CPA) determination were performed on eye tissues and fluids.

    Main Results:

    • Three types of clinically detectable eye lesions were observed: iritis with nodules, vitreous lesions, and optic nerve involvement.
    • Lesions appeared within 1-3 weeks and largely resolved by 10 weeks.
    • CPA determination was the most sensitive diagnostic method for ocular cryptococcosis.

    Conclusions:

    • The rabbit model effectively mimics human ocular cryptococcosis.
    • This model is valuable for studying hematogenous cryptococcal endophthalmitis and evaluating diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
