    Scintigraphic bleeding studies can reveal non-bleeding abnormalities. Recognizing these findings in nuclear medicine imaging prevents misdiagnosis and provides valuable clinical insights.

    Background:

    • Scintigraphic bleeding studies are crucial for detecting gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
    • Commonly used agents include Technetium-99m sulfur colloid and Technetium-99m labeled red blood cells.
    • Accurate interpretation relies on differentiating bleeding from other findings.

    Observation:

    • A retrospective review of 80 scintigraphic bleeding studies identified five cases with abnormal findings unrelated to bleeding.
    • These non-bleeding abnormalities were sometimes mistaken for bleeding or obscured actual bleeding sites.
    • Other findings included bone marrow abnormalities, hyperemia, and aortic aneurysms.

    Findings:

    • Abnormalities included bone marrow replacement due to tumor or radiation therapy.
    • Hyperemia associated with uterine leiomyoma and diverticular abscesses were noted.
    • Dilated abdominal aorta (aneurysm) was another significant non-bleeding finding.

    Implications:

    • Recognizing these incidental findings is vital to avoid erroneous diagnoses of bleeding.
    • Such abnormalities can offer significant additional clinical information, aiding patient management.
    • Enhanced awareness improves the diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility of scintigraphic studies.
