B-cell lymphomas of extranodal origin.

Summary

Extranodal malignant lymphomas most commonly originate in the tonsils and stomach. B-cell lymphomas are predominant in most extranodal sites, but T-cell lymphomas are equally common in the nasal cavity and skin.

Background:

Malignant lymphomas can originate outside of lymph nodes (extranodal).
Understanding the origin and cell type distribution of extranodal lymphomas is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.
Previous studies have indicated varying frequencies and cell types of extranodal lymphomas across different sites.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the frequency and anatomical distribution of extranodal malignant lymphomas.
To determine the cell type classification (B-cell, T-cell, or undecided) of these extranodal lymphomas.
To explore potential correlations between lymphoid tissue presence and lymphoma cell type predominance.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 448 extranodal malignant lymphoma cases diagnosed between 1955 and 1980.
Classification of lymphomas based on morphology, supplemented by immunoperoxidase tests and surface marker studies.
Categorization of extranodal sites by lymphoma origin frequency and cell type.

Main Results:

Tonsils and stomach were the most frequent origins of extranodal lymphomas.
B-cell type lymphomas predominated in the pharynx, tonsil, stomach, intestine, thyroid, and orbita.
T-cell and B-cell lymphomas were equally frequent in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses; T-cell lymphomas were noted in three cases of 'rhinitis gangrenosa'.

Conclusions:

Extranodal lymphomas exhibit site-specific origins and cell type distributions.
Sites with abundant lymphoid tissue or frequent hyperplasia may favor B-cell lymphoma development.
Nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and skin show a notable prevalence of T-cell lymphomas, warranting further investigation.
