A severe endophthalmitis after Lincoff-Custodis procedure.

M Moschos

    Annals of Ophthalmology
    |September 1, 1983
    PubMed
    Summary

Serious endophthalmitis can occur two years after a Lincoff-Custodis procedure. Prompt therapeutic measures are crucial to prevent vision loss and phthisis bulbi, even years post-surgery.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Retinal Surgery

    Background:

    • The Lincoff-Custodis procedure is a surgical technique used for retinal detachment repair.
    • Silastic sponges are employed in this procedure to maintain retinal apposition.

    Observation:

    • A case of endophthalmitis is presented two years following a Lincoff-Custodis procedure.
    • The patient experienced vision loss and subsequent phthisis bulbi despite removal of the silastic sponge.

    Findings:

    • Endophthalmitis is a potential, serious complication that can manifest late, up to two years post-Lincoff-Custodis procedure.
    • Phthisis bulbi and irreversible vision loss can occur if endophthalmitis is not adequately treated.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of vigilant long-term monitoring after retinal detachment surgery.

  • Delayed diagnosis and treatment of endophthalmitis can lead to catastrophic ocular outcomes.
  • The findings underscore the need for comprehensive therapeutic strategies to manage late-onset endophthalmitis.
