    Summary

    Liver infarcts are rare but CT scans can help diagnose them before autopsy. Characteristic wedge-shaped, low-attenuation zones on contrast-enhanced scans aid in distinguishing hepatic infarction from abscess.

    Background:

    • Hepatic infarction is a rare condition often diagnosed post-mortem.
    • Distinguishing hepatic infarction from other liver pathologies, such as abscess, can be challenging clinically.

    Observation:

    • A study examined the computed tomography (CT) appearance of hepatic infarction in five patients.
    • Contrast-enhanced CT scans revealed well-defined, wedge-shaped, low-attenuation zones in four patients.
    • Infarcts predominantly affected the right lobe of the liver, with left lobe involvement in two cases.

    Findings:

    • Hepatic infarction presented as distinct low-attenuation areas on contrast-enhanced CT.
    • Associated splenic and renal infarcts were observed in a subset of patients.
    • CT findings differed from those of hepatic abscess, enabling noninvasive differentiation.

    Implications:

    • CT imaging is crucial for the early and accurate diagnosis of hepatic infarction.
    • Noninvasive CT assessment can differentiate hepatic infarction from hepatic abscess.
    • Improved diagnostic capabilities may lead to timely intervention and better patient outcomes.
