Skin involvement of malignant B-cell lymphomas.

W Sterry, G R Krüger, G K Steigleder

The Journal of Dermatologic Surgery and Oncology
    |April 1, 1984
    PubMed
    Summary

Skin involvement in malignant B-cell lymphomas occurred in 6.17% to 9.7% of patients. This skin manifestation generally indicates a worse prognosis, except in medium-grade lymphomas.

    Area of Science:

    • Hematology
    • Oncology
    • Dermatology

    Background:

    • Malignant B-cell lymphomas are a diverse group of cancers.
    • Skin involvement can occur in lymphomas, potentially affecting patient outcomes.
    • Understanding the frequency and prognostic impact of skin involvement is crucial for patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the incidence of skin involvement across different grades of systemic malignant B-cell lymphomas.
    • To evaluate the association between skin involvement and prognosis in these lymphomas.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 1186 patients diagnosed with systemic malignant B-cell lymphomas.
    • Categorization of lymphomas into low, medium, and high grades.
    • Assessment of skin involvement at diagnosis and correlation with patient prognosis.

    Main Results:

    • Skin involvement was observed in 6.17% of low-grade, 9.7% of medium-grade, and 7.4% of high-grade malignant B-cell lymphomas.
    • Overall, skin involvement was linked to an impaired prognosis.
    • An exception was noted in medium-grade malignant lymphomas, where skin involvement did not significantly worsen the prognosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Skin involvement is a relevant clinical feature in systemic malignant B-cell lymphomas.
    • The prognostic significance of skin involvement varies by lymphoma grade, with medium-grade lymphomas being an exception.
    • Further research may elucidate the specific mechanisms behind these grade-dependent prognostic differences.
