    Background:

    • Accurate measurement of tracheal dimensions is essential for diagnosing respiratory conditions.
    • Establishing normative data for tracheal air column diameters aids in differentiating normal variations from pathological changes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the normal range for coronal and sagittal tracheal air column diameters in an adult population.
    • To provide reference values for radiographic assessment of the trachea.

    Main Methods:

    • Posteroanterior and lateral chest radiographs were analyzed from 808 asymptomatic individuals (430 male, 378 female) aged 10-79.
    • Coronal and sagittal diameters of the tracheal air column were measured.
    • Normative ranges were calculated based on mean values plus or minus three standard deviations.

    Main Results:

    • Upper limits of normal for men (20-79 years) are 25 mm (coronal) and 27 mm (sagittal).
    • Upper limits of normal for women are 21 mm (coronal) and 23 mm (sagittal).
    • Lower limits of normal are 13 mm (men) and 10 mm (women) for both dimensions.

    Conclusions:

    • Established normative ranges for tracheal air column diameters can aid in identifying pathological widening or narrowing.
    • No significant correlation was found between tracheal caliber and body weight or height.
