    Occupational asbestos exposure, even at low fiber levels, led to minor lung function impairment in male workers. Obstructive changes were observed, affecting both smokers and never-smokers similarly.

    Background:

    • Asbestos cement plant workers with over 10 years of employment were studied.
    • Exposure involved chrysotile asbestos, with dust levels around 10 mg/m3 and fiber concentrations averaging 2 fibers/ml between 1950-1970.
    • Subjects with pneumoconioses and ex-smokers were excluded from the exposed group.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of occupational asbestos exposure on lung function in male workers.
    • To determine if low-level asbestos exposure causes significant lung function changes.
    • To assess the effect of asbestos exposure on smokers and never-smokers.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 77 smokers and 48 never-smokers exposed to asbestos was compared with a referent group from non-asbestos plants.

    • Exposure to dust with relatively low asbestos fiber concentrations resulted in minor lung function impairment.
    • Obstructive changes were the primary lung function alterations observed.
    • The findings suggest that even controlled occupational asbestos exposure can have detrimental effects on respiratory health.
