Summary

This study found no significant link between psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis in adults. While rheumatic diseases were more common in psoriasis patients, specific inflammatory arthritis diagnoses did not differ significantly between groups.

Background:

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic autoimmune disease.
The relationship between psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis requires further population-based investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis in a general population.
To compare the prevalence of various rheumatic diseases in individuals with and without psoriasis.

Main Methods:

Population-based survey of 3659 individuals aged 20 years and older.
Data collection on psoriasis presence and rheumatological diagnoses.
Statistical comparison between psoriatic and control groups.

Main Results:

No significant association was found between psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Rheumatic diseases were more prevalent in psoriatics (59%) than controls (46%), but the mean number of diagnoses was similar (1.1 vs 1.3).
Inflammatory arthritis prevalence showed no significant difference between groups (5% vs 2.2%).

Conclusions:

Psoriasis is not significantly associated with rheumatoid arthritis in the general population.
Increased locomotor complaints in psoriasis patients may lead to higher referral rates, potentially influencing observed disease frequencies.
Further research is needed to understand the complex interplay between psoriasis and musculoskeletal conditions.
