    Summary

    Computed tomographic (CT) scans reveal temporal bone fractures in trauma patients. High-resolution CT is superior to routine CT for detecting these injuries and associated neurological deficits.

    Background:

    • Temporal bone trauma can result from significant head injuries.
    • Accurate diagnosis of temporal bone fractures is crucial for managing associated neurological deficits, including facial nerve and hearing impairment.
    • Conventional computed tomographic (CT) imaging may have limitations in detecting subtle temporal bone injuries.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review computed tomographic (CT) findings in patients with temporal bone trauma.
    • To evaluate the efficacy of routine versus high-resolution CT in diagnosing temporal bone fractures.
    • To correlate imaging findings with neurological deficits.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of CT scans from 18 patients with temporal bone trauma.
    • Analysis of fracture patterns (longitudinal, transverse, mastoid) and associated injuries (ossicular dislocation, mastoid fractures).
    • Correlation of CT findings with neurological evaluations and comparison between routine (10 mm sections) and high-resolution CT.

    • Temporal bone fractures are associated with significant neurological deficits, including permanent facial nerve or hearing loss.
    • Temporal bone fractures can be incidentally discovered or obscured by more severe neurological compromise in major trauma settings.
