    Background:

    • The migrating myoelectrical cycle (MMC) is a key pattern of small intestine motility.
    • Postoperative recovery of gastrointestinal function is crucial for patient outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of abdominal surgery on the myoelectrical activity of the small intestine.
    • To determine the timeline for the return of normal small bowel motility patterns after laparotomy.

    Main Methods:

    • Serosal electrodes were implanted in 4 dogs to record small intestinal myoelectrical activity.
    • Recordings were analyzed daily for the presence of the activity front (phase III) of the MMC following surgery.

    Main Results:

    • No activity fronts were detected on postoperative days 1 and 2.
    • A reduced incidence of activity fronts was observed from days 3 to 6.
    • Normal occurrence of activity fronts resumed by day 7 post-surgery.

    Conclusions:

    • Small intestine myoelectrical activity, specifically the MMC, is significantly disrupted for at least two days after abdominal surgery.
    • The assumption that small bowel motility rapidly normalizes after routine abdominal surgery may be incorrect.
