C3 nephritic factor and hypocomplementaemia in a clinically healthy individual.

Summary

Nephritic factor (C3NeF) was found in a healthy individual after an illness similar to disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI). This suggests C3NeF may occur more often than previously thought, even without associated kidney disease.

Background:

Nephritic factor (C3NeF) is typically associated with kidney diseases like glomerulonephritis and lipodystrophy.
C3NeF activates the alternative complement pathway, leading to decreased levels of the third complement component (C3).
