C3 nephritic factor and hypocomplementaemia in a clinically healthy individual.

    Summary

Nephritic factor (C3NeF) was found in a healthy individual after an illness similar to disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI). This suggests C3NeF may occur more often than previously thought, even without associated kidney disease.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Nephrology
    • Complement System

    Background:

    • Nephritic factor (C3NeF) is typically associated with kidney diseases like glomerulonephritis and lipodystrophy.
    • C3NeF activates the alternative complement pathway, leading to decreased levels of the third complement component (C3).
    • Disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI) can trigger various immune responses, but its link to C3NeF is not well-established.
