    Background:

    • Hodgkin's disease is a malignancy of the lymphatic system.
    • Circulating immune complexes (CICs) are implicated in various autoimmune and malignant conditions.
    • Accurate assessment of disease activity in Hodgkin's disease is crucial for patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and levels of CICs in untreated Hodgkin's disease patients.
    • To correlate CIC levels with disease activity and specific subtypes.
    • To evaluate the diagnostic potential of CIC quantification in Hodgkin's disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Sera from 28 Hodgkin's disease patients and 120 healthy controls were analyzed.
    • A modified 3% polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation method was used to quantify precipitable protein.
    • Laser nephelometry was employed for partial component analysis of precipitates (immunoglobulins and complement).

    Main Results:

    • Elevated CICs were detected in 79% of Hodgkin's disease patients (p < 0.005).
    • CIC levels correlated with disease activity, including B-symptoms and advanced stages (e.g., stage-III B nodular sclerosis).
    • Elevated precipitable IgM was the most sensitive indicator (86%), followed by IgG, C4, and Clq.

    Conclusions:

    • Quantification of CICs and their components shows promise as an adjunct tool for assessing Hodgkin's disease activity.
    • Specific immune complex components, particularly IgM, may serve as valuable biomarkers.
    • Further research is warranted to establish the clinical utility of CIC measurement in Hodgkin's disease management.
