Background:

Associations between life events and perinatal complications are known.
Existing life event scales lack relevance for obstetric populations.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate life event scales specifically for primiparous (first-time) and multiparous (subsequent pregnancy) women.
To incorporate both general and pregnancy-specific life events into the scales.
To assess the distress associated with these life events.

Development of new life event scales incorporating items from general scales and pregnancy-specific events.
Utilized visual analogue scales to measure the degree of distress caused by life events.
Assessed the frequency of each life event within the study samples.
Evaluated internal consistency and rank ordering of ratings between primiparous and multiparous groups.

The developed scales demonstrated high internal consistency.
Rank ordering of life event ratings was similar in both primiparous and multiparous samples, suggesting general utility.
