    Summary

Determining sampling reliability in elicited imitation requires careful consideration of trial numbers. This study found that even three trials can provide reliable data for language-disordered children aged 5-6 years.

    Area of Science:

    • Linguistics
    • Speech-Language Pathology
    • Developmental Psychology

    Background:

    • Elicited imitation is a common method for assessing children's language abilities.
    • Establishing sampling reliability is crucial for accurate language assessment.
    • The optimal number of trials for reliable elicited imitation data is not well-defined.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the number of trials necessary for sampling reliability in elicited imitation.
    • To compare subject performance across different trial numbers (1, 3, 5, 7 vs. 10 trials).
    • To investigate the reliability of elicited imitation data in language-disordered children.

    Main Methods:

    • An examiner-constructed elicited imitation test was administered to 15 language-disordered subjects (age 5:6 to 6:6 years).
    • Test sentences controlled for length, syntax, and semantics, featuring 16 syntactic structures.
    • Subject performance on 1, 3, 5, and 7 trials was compared to performance on 10 trials.

    Main Results:

    • Sampling reliability in elicited imitation increased with the number of trials.
    • Reliable data for syntactic structures was obtained with as few as three trials.
    • Performance comparisons indicated a trend towards stability with increasing trials.

    Conclusions:

    • Three trials of elicited imitation can yield reliable data for assessing syntactic structures in language-disordered children.
    • Increasing the number of trials enhances sampling reliability.
    • These findings have implications for efficient and effective language assessment protocols.
