    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of dietary tryptophan on sleep patterns in newborn infants.
    • To compare the impact of tryptophan versus valine supplementation on infant sleep onset.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty healthy newborns (2-3 days old) received one of three feedings: tryptophan in glucose, valine in glucose, or routine formula (Similac).
    • Sleep patterns (active and quiet sleep onset) were monitored for three hours post-feeding.
    • Valine was used as a control due to its competition with tryptophan for brain entry.

    Main Results:

    • Infants fed tryptophan entered active sleep 14.1 minutes sooner and quiet sleep 20 minutes sooner than after Similac.
    • Infants fed valine entered active sleep 15.8 minutes later and quiet sleep 39 minutes later than after Similac.
    • Significant differences were observed between tryptophan and valine groups for both active and quiet sleep onset.

    Conclusions:

    • Dietary variations, specifically tryptophan availability, can significantly influence sleep behavior in newborns.
    • Tryptophan supplementation appears to promote earlier sleep onset in infants.
    • Further research into nutritional impacts on infant sleep is warranted.
