    Summary

Pregnancy is safe after urinary diversion procedures like ureterosigmoid anastomosis or ileal conduit. Most common complication is urinary tract infection, but renal function and fetal growth remain normal.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Obstetrics & Gynecology
    • Nephrology

    Background:

    • Urinary diversion procedures alter normal urinary tract anatomy.
    • The impact of pregnancy on patients with urinary diversion is not well-established.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the safety and outcomes of pregnancy in patients with ureterosigmoid anastomosis or ileal conduit urinary diversions.
    • To assess maternal and fetal well-being during and after pregnancy in this patient population.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective case series of four patients with five pregnancies.
    • Review of medical records, laboratory data, radiographic studies, and obstetric outcomes.
    • Literature review on pregnancy outcomes after urinary diversion.

    Main Results:

    • The most frequent complication was urinary tract infection (UTI).
    • No significant urinary tract obstruction occurred during pregnancy or delivery.
    • Maternal renal function remained stable.
    • Offspring demonstrated appropriate growth and had no congenital anomalies.

    Conclusions:

    • Pregnancy is not contraindicated following ureterosigmoid anastomosis or ileal conduit urinary diversion.
    • Vaginal delivery is considered safe; cesarean section is reserved for obstetric indications.
    • Patients require close monitoring for urinary tract infections.
