    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Psychology

    Background:

    • Identifying suitable candidates for insight-oriented psychotherapy is crucial for treatment success.
    • Existing methods may not fully capture the nuances of patient suitability.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe and evaluate a novel instrumental tool for rating patient suitability for insight-oriented psychotherapy.
    • To assess the reliability and validity of this new instrument.

    Main Methods:

    • Development of a 24-scale instrument based on Dewald's factors, with each scale having 5 steps.
    • Inter-rater reliability was assessed in 25 cases.
    • Construct validity was examined by comparing suitable (I) and not suitable (NI) patient groups (29 pairs).

    Main Results:

    • Eleven scales demonstrated inter-rater reliability greater than 0.60.
    • Four subscales significantly correlated with suitability: environmental factors, symptom variability, self-confidence, and psychodynamic formulation focus.
    • Suitable patients had higher social class, dominance, lower neuroticism, better therapist experience, lower symptom intensity, and improved more with unspecific treatments, though differences were small.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed instrument shows promise in identifying patients for insight-oriented psychotherapy.
    • Further refinement may be needed to improve predictive validity, considering rater perspectives and global variable nature.
