    Summary

Sensorimotor facilitation procedures showed some success in improving oral motor function and feeding behaviors for students with severe developmental delay. One student experienced significant gains, while others showed partial benefits from the oral habilitation program.

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric therapy
    • Developmental disabilities research

    Background:

    • Children with severe developmental delay often face challenges with oral motor function and feeding.
    • Effective interventions are crucial for improving quality of life and nutritional intake.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To explore the efficacy of sensorimotor facilitation procedures in enhancing oral motor skills and feeding behaviors.
    • To assess the impact of an oral habilitation program on students with severe developmental delay.

    Main Methods:

    • A multiple baseline across-subjects design was employed with four students.
    • The sensorimotor facilitation program was introduced in a staggered manner.
    • Graphic analysis and split-middle trend estimation were used for data analysis.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • One student demonstrated significant improvements in weight gain and oral motor evaluation.
    • Two students exhibited partial improvements in oral motor function and feeding.
    • Treatment effectiveness varied among the participants.

    Conclusions:

    • Sensorimotor facilitation may offer benefits for oral motor function and feeding in some students with severe developmental delay.
    • Further research is needed to identify factors influencing treatment success and optimize interventions.
