Syp-3, a third polymorphic locus for mouse seminal vesicle proteins.

R Moutier, M F Bertrand

    Biochemical Genetics
    |August 1, 1983
    PubMed
    Summary

The Svp-3 gene controls mouse seminal vesicle protein variation, with two alleles identified. This locus is closely linked to Svp-1 on chromosome 2, impacting protein polymorphism research.

    Area of Science:

    • Genetics and Genomics
    • Mammalian Molecular Biology
    • Protein Polymorphism Studies

    Background:

    • Mouse seminal vesicle proteins (SVPs) are crucial for reproductive biology and exhibit genetic polymorphism.
    • Previous studies identified polymorphic loci Svp-1 and Svp-2, but a third locus remained uncharacterized.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize the genetic basis of a novel seminal vesicle protein phenotype in the B10.AKM/Sn congenic strain.
    • To assign a symbol and identify alleles for this third polymorphic locus.

    Main Methods:

    • Phenotypic analysis of seminal vesicle proteins in the B10.AKM/Sn strain.
    • Genetic mapping to determine the chromosomal location and linkage of the new locus.

    Main Results:

    • A new polymorphic locus, designated Svp-3, was identified.
    • Two codominant alleles were discovered: Svp-3a (found in B10.AKM/Sn) and Svp-3b (found in other tested strains).
    • The Svp-3 locus was found to be tightly linked to the Svp-1 locus on chromosome 2.

    Conclusions:

    • The Svp-3 locus represents the third characterized polymorphic system for mouse seminal vesicle proteins.
    • The tight linkage between Svp-3 and Svp-1 provides a valuable marker for genetic studies on chromosome 2.
