    Background:

    • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common human cancer.
    • Amyloid deposition is a hallmark of various diseases, but its role in BCC is not well understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and characteristics of intratumor amyloid deposits in basal cell carcinoma.
    • To explore potential correlations between amyloid deposition and clinicopathological features of BCC.

    Main Methods:

    • Congo-red staining was used to screen 53 unselected cases of basal cell carcinoma for amyloid.
    • Amyloid deposits were characterized based on their location, resistance to permanganate, and association with solar elastosis.
    • Histological subtypes, tumor ulceration, and stromal infiltrate density were analyzed in relation to amyloid positivity.

    Main Results:

    • Amyloid deposits were detected in 35 of 53 (66%) BCC cases.
    • Amyloid positivity was higher in male subjects compared to female subjects.
    • Deposits were permanganate-resistant, located in the stroma, and often associated with solar elastosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Intratumor amyloid deposition is a frequent finding in basal cell carcinoma.
    • The characteristics of these deposits suggest they may originate from tumor cell apoptosis.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise origin and functional significance of amyloid in BCC.
