    Summary

    Young pigs experienced vomiting and feed refusal when fed vomitoxin-contaminated corn. Even at high levels, no physical lesions were found, but low feed intake affected blood serum characteristics.

    Background:

    • Vomitoxin (deoxynivalenol) is a mycotoxin commonly found in contaminated grains.
    • Understanding the toxicological effects of vomitoxin in livestock is crucial for animal health and food safety.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the impact of varying dietary levels of vomitoxin-contaminated corn on pig performance and pathology.
    • To determine the threshold for adverse effects of vomitoxin in young pigs.

    Main Methods:

    • Four controlled trials were conducted using young pigs.
    • Pigs were fed diets containing different concentrations of vomitoxin-contaminated corn.
    • Performance metrics (feed intake, weight gain) and pathological examinations were assessed.

    Main Results:

    • A dietary level of approximately 20 ppm vomitoxin induced vomiting.

    • Acute exposure to high levels of vomitoxin (up to 43 ppm) did not cause observable pathological lesions in young pigs within 21 days.
    • Further research is needed to differentiate the direct effects of vomitoxin on blood serum from those secondary to reduced feed intake.
