    Background:

    • Operating microscopes are essential tools in modern surgery.
    • The potential for light-induced retinal damage from surgical illumination is a concern.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of operating microscope light on retinal tissue.
    • To compare the impact of filtered versus unfiltered light on the macula.

    Main Methods:

    • Cynomolgous monkeys were exposed to operating microscope light.
    • One eye received filtered blue spectrum light; the other received unfiltered light.
    • Ophthalmoscopic and histologic examinations were performed.

    Main Results:

    • No discrete retinal lesions were observed ophthalmoscopically in either group.
    • Histologic examination revealed foveomacular changes in eyes exposed to unfiltered light.
    • Eyes exposed to filtered light exhibited less severe histologic changes.

    Conclusions:

    • Operating microscope light, particularly unfiltered, can induce histologic foveomacular changes.
    • Filtering the blue spectrum of light may mitigate some of the observed retinal damage.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the long-term implications of surgical light exposure.
