Small bowel obstruction and previous gynecologic surgery.

J B Ratcliff, P Kapernick, G G Brooks

    Southern Medical Journal
    |November 1, 1983

    Summary

Previous abdominal surgery, particularly abdominal hysterectomy, significantly increases the risk of small bowel obstruction due to adhesions. Gynecologic surgery poses a higher risk than previously reported.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Gynecologic Surgery
    • Surgical Complications

    Background:

    • Small bowel obstruction is a common surgical complication.
    • Adhesions are a known cause of small bowel obstruction.
    • Gynecologic surgery is frequently associated with abdominal adhesions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the incidence of small bowel obstruction in women.
    • To determine the correlation between previous abdominal surgery and small bowel obstruction.
    • To assess the specific risk of small bowel obstruction following abdominal hysterectomy.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective chart review of patients diagnosed with small bowel obstruction.
    • Analysis of patient history, focusing on prior abdominal surgeries.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Specific examination of cases following abdominal hysterectomy.
  • Main Results:

    • 83% of patients with small bowel obstruction had prior abdominal surgery.
    • 67% of patients had undergone an abdominal hysterectomy.
    • 100% of obstructions post-hysterectomy were linked to adhesions at reperitonealization sites or the anterior abdominal wall.

    Conclusions:

    • Abdominal hysterectomy is associated with a high incidence of small bowel obstruction.
    • Adhesions at reperitonealization sites are a primary cause of obstruction after hysterectomy.
    • Gynecologic surgery may lead to a higher rate of small bowel obstruction than previously recognized.
