[UV-B phototherapy in psoriasis].

    Summary

    UV-B phototherapy is effective for certain psoriasis types, particularly acute eruptive or seborrheic psoriasis. However, plaque psoriasis shows better response to PUVA, and UV-B requires careful consideration for long-term risks like carcinogenicity.

    Background:

    • Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
    • Phototherapy is a common treatment for psoriasis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of UV-B phototherapy for different types of psoriasis.
    • To compare UV-B phototherapy with PUVA for plaque psoriasis.

    Main Methods:

    • 67 patients with psoriasis (chronic plaque, acute eruptive, seborrheic) were treated with UV-B phototherapy.
    • A split comparison study evaluated UV-B versus PUVA for plaque psoriasis.

    Main Results:

    • 92% of patients with acute/seborrheic psoriasis showed satisfactory results with UV-B.
    • 46% of plaque psoriasis patients responded to UV-B, requiring more exposures and higher doses.
    • PUVA demonstrated superiority over UV-B for plaque psoriasis in initial treatment and remission duration.

    Conclusions:

    • UV-B phototherapy is an effective alternative for specific psoriasis subtypes.
    • PUVA is more effective for plaque psoriasis than UV-B.
    • Long-term risks of UV-B, including carcinogenicity, warrant careful evaluation similar to PUVA.
