    Summary

    This study investigated chronic hepatitis in Bedlington terriers, finding high hepatic copper levels. Treatment with d-penicillamine showed no significant improvement in liver pathology or copper reduction.

    Area of Science:

    Background:

    • Bedlington terriers are predisposed to copper toxicosis.
    • Chronic hepatitis is a significant liver disease in canines.

    Observation:

    • Four related Australian Bedlington terriers presented with chronic hepatitis and markedly elevated hepatic copper concentrations (1,600–6,361 µg/g dry weight).
    • Clinical signs ranged from asymptomatic to severe liver dysfunction.
    • Two affected dogs received d-penicillamine treatment.

    Findings:

    • Histopathological liver changes remained unchanged after one year of d-penicillamine therapy.
    • Hepatic copper levels did not significantly decrease in the treated dog.
    • d-Penicillamine demonstrated limited efficacy in managing copper-associated chronic hepatitis in this cohort.

    Implications:

    • This highlights the challenges in treating copper toxicosis in Bedlington terriers.
    • Further research into alternative or adjunctive therapies for canine copper-associated hepatitis is warranted.
    • Understanding genetic predispositions is crucial for managing inherited liver diseases in dogs.
