    Summary

    This study reveals hibernomas exhibit endocrine-like secretory activity, producing steroid hormones like cortisol and testosterone. Unique ultrastructural features suggest novel cellular secretion and vascularization mechanisms in these tumors.

    Background:

    • A large hibernoma was analyzed using light, ultrastructural, biochemical, and histochemical methods.
    • Morphological and biochemical analyses revealed endocrine-like secretory activity.

    Findings:

    • Biochemical analyses detected cholesterol and steroid hormones, including cortisol and testosterone, confirmed by radioimmunoassay and immunocytochemistry.
    • Ultrastructural examination identified novel features: 'endoplasmacrine' lipid secretion, plasmalemmal granules, periodic plasmalemmal densities, and highly innervated vascular structures resembling adrenal gland veins.

    Implications:

    • These findings suggest hibernomas may possess endocrine functions previously unrecognized.
    • The unique ultrastructural characteristics offer new insights into tumor biology and cellular secretion mechanisms.
    • Further research may explore the clinical relevance of these endocrine-like properties in hibernomas.
