C S Wright, R Y McMurtry

    The Journal of Hand Surgery
    |November 1, 1983
    PubMed
    Summary

The Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (AO) method achieved a 96% fusion success rate in 83 patients undergoing arthrodesis. This reliable surgical technique offers excellent pain relief with a low complication rate.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Skeletal Reconstruction

    Background:

    • Arthrodesis is a surgical procedure to fuse bones.
    • The Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (AO) developed a specific method for arthrodesis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the AO method for arthrodesis.
    • To determine fusion rates and complication incidence across different joint levels.

    Main Methods:

    • The AO method of arthrodesis was applied to 83 patients, involving 110 joints.
    • Data on fusion success, joint-specific outcomes, and complications were collected.

    Main Results:

    • An overall fusion success rate of 96% was achieved.
    • Specific fusion rates included 93% for the wrist, 96% for metacarpophalangeal joints, and 100% for proximal interphalangeal joints.
    • A low incidence of complications was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • The AO method provides a highly reliable fusion rate for arthrodesis.
    • This technique leads to excellent pain relief for patients.
    • The AO method is a safe and effective surgical option for joint fusion.
