    Summary

This study screened 428 school leavers from White, Black, and Asian ethnic groups. No significant blood pressure differences were found between groups, but Black pupils showed a stronger family history of hypertension.

    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Anthropometry
    • Cardiovascular Health

    Background:

    • Ethnic variations in health markers are crucial for targeted public health interventions.
    • Understanding anthropometric differences and their relation to cardiovascular risk factors across ethnic groups is essential.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To screen school leavers from White, Black, and Asian ethnic groups for blood pressure and anthropometric characteristics.
    • To investigate ethnic differences in blood pressure, resting pulse rate, and general anthropometric features.
    • To explore family history of hypertension across different ethnic groups.

    Main Methods:

    • Screening of 428 school leavers from three distinct ethnic groups: White, Black, and Asian.
    • Measurement of blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), resting pulse rate, and general anthropometric characteristics.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Collection of data on family history of hypertension.
  • Main Results:

    • Asian pupils were significantly shorter and lighter than White and Black pupils.
    • Black males were heavier and taller compared to other groups.
    • No significant differences in mean systolic or diastolic blood pressure were observed among the three ethnic groups.
    • Black pupils reported a stronger family history of hypertension, particularly maternal lineage.

    Conclusions:

    • Despite anthropometric variations, ethnic groups showed similar blood pressure levels in this cohort.
    • A notable familial predisposition to hypertension exists in the Black ethnic group.
    • Findings provide baseline data for the local population, highlighting potential ethnic-specific risk factors for future studies.
