Y Ploysongsang, S A Schonfeld

The American Review of Respiratory Disease
    |December 1, 1983

    Summary

Pulmonary function studies in North American blastomycosis showed significant lung restriction and airway obstruction. Adequate therapy led to complete resolution of these pulmonary issues and full recovery.

    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Medical Mycology

    Background:

    • North American blastomycosis is a fungal infection that can affect the lungs.
    • Pulmonary function is often impaired in patients with blastomycosis.

    Observation:

    • Detailed pulmonary function studies were conducted on two patients with diffuse pulmonary North American blastomycosis.
    • Measurements were taken before and after antifungal therapy.

    Findings:

    • The studies revealed significant increases in lung restriction, stiffness, and small airways obstruction.
    • These pulmonary function abnormalities completely resolved following treatment.

    Implications:

    • Adequate therapy can lead to complete clinical and physiological recovery in blastomycosis patients.
    • Pulmonary function testing is valuable for assessing disease severity and treatment response.
