    Both type II collagen and the minor collagen 1 alpha 2 alpha 3 alpha are immunogenic and arthritogenic in rats. Arthritis development varied between rat strains, indicating strain-specific responses to these cartilage collagens.

    Background:

    • Cartilage contains multiple collagen types, with type II being the major component.
    • The role of minor collagen components in cartilage, such as 1 alpha 2 alpha 3 alpha collagen, in immune responses and arthritis is less understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the immunogenicity and arthritogenicity of native 1 alpha 2 alpha 3 alpha collagen compared to native type II collagen in different rat strains.
    • To characterize the inflammatory polyarthritis induced by these collagens.

    Main Methods:

    • Administration of native 1 alpha 2 alpha 3 alpha collagen and native type II collagen (500 micrograms per rat) to Alderley Park and Sprague-Dawley rats.
