    Summary

    Long-term follow-up of staphylococcal pneumonia patients revealed no lasting clinical or radiological issues. Lung function remained normal, with no increased incidence of airway hyperreactivity years after infection.

    Background:

    • Staphylococcal pneumonia, particularly with empyema, can lead to severe lung damage.
    • Long-term sequelae of staphylococcal pneumonia are not well-documented.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the long-term clinical, radiological, and functional outcomes in patients treated for staphylococcal pneumonia.
    • To investigate the incidence of chronic lung disease and airway hyperreactivity post-infection.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study of 23 patients 12-25 years post-staphylococcal pneumonia.
    • Clinical examination, radiological imaging, pulmonary function tests, and histamine inhalation challenge performed.

    Main Results:

    • No clinical or radiological evidence of persistent lung damage was observed.
    • All subjects demonstrated normal lung function.
    • No increased incidence of airway hyperreactivity was detected.

    Conclusions:

    • Staphylococcal pneumonia, even with empyema, does not appear to cause chronic lung disease or persistent respiratory symptoms.
    • Patients can expect a full recovery with no long-term pulmonary sequelae.
