    Summary

    Newborn foals experienced fatal hepatic failure due to a microorganism culture product. This product, administered at birth, caused severe liver damage and hepatoencephalopathy in the affected foals.

    Background:

    • Neonatal hepatic failure is a critical concern in foal health.
    • Identifying the etiology of acute liver disease in foals is essential for effective treatment and prevention.

    Observation:

    • Eight foals aged 2-5 days presented with depression, icterus, and elevated liver enzymes, indicative of subacute hepatic disease.
    • Pathological examination revealed significantly reduced liver size, bile ductule proliferation, hepatic necrosis, and Alzheimer type II astrocytes in the brain, suggesting hepatoencephalopathy.
    • Laboratory findings included elevated plasma ammonia, altered amino acid ratios, increased bilirubin and liver enzymes, and prolonged clotting times.

    Findings:

    • The clinical and pathological findings suggested hepatic failure potentially caused by prenatal or postnatal toxin exposure.
