    Summary

    Urinary abnormalities like proteinuria and microhematuria are common in Behçet's syndrome. These findings suggest a benign renal lesion, distinct from amyloidosis, affects patients with this condition.

    Background:

    • Behçet's syndrome is a multisystemic inflammatory disorder.
    • Renal involvement in Behçet's syndrome is not fully understood.
    • Previous reports suggested amyloidosis as a cause of renal pathology.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and nature of urinary abnormalities in Behçet's syndrome.
    • To determine if amyloidosis is the underlying cause of renal pathology.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 77 Behçet's syndrome cases.
    • Prospective evaluation of 51 patients from the initial cohort.
    • Urinalysis, pyelography, and rectal biopsies were performed.

    Main Results:

    • 17 out of 33 patients in the retrospective study had abnormal urinalysis.
    • An additional 8 patients showed urinary abnormalities in the prospective study, totaling 25.
    • Abnormalities primarily consisted of proteinuria and/or microhematuria, often intermittent or persistent.
    • Urinary sediment lacked leukocytes and casts; pyelography and rectal biopsies were unrevealing for amyloidosis.

    Conclusions:

    • A benign renal lesion is suggested in Behçet's syndrome.
    • Amyloid deposition is unlikely to be the pathological substrate for these renal findings.
