    Summary

    Young men with obstructive azoospermia have significantly higher rates of sinorespiratory diseases. This study confirms a strong link between male infertility and conditions affecting the airways and sinuses.

    Background:

    • Male infertility is sometimes associated with respiratory conditions like cystic fibrosis and Kartagener's syndrome.
    • Young's syndrome links bronchiectasis with obstructive azoospermia and normal testicular function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the prevalence and types of respiratory tract disease in infertile men with mechanical azoospermia.
    • To compare respiratory health in infertile men with a control group.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 34 infertile men with obstructive azoospermia and control subjects.
    • Utilized sinus radiographs, patient histories (sinusitis, otitis media, bronchitis), and chest radiographs.
    • Assessed pulmonary function tests for airflow obstruction.

    Main Results:

    • 59% of infertile men had abnormal sinus radiographs versus 18% of controls (p<0.01).
    • 35% had chronic bronchitis, and 10 (29%) had bronchiectasis (p<0.001).
    • Chest radiographs were abnormal in 53% of infertile men (p<0.001).

    Conclusions:

    • A significant excess of sinorespiratory disease is present in young men with obstructive azoospermia.
    • The study identified a strong association between male infertility and respiratory conditions but found no specific explanatory factors for disease variation.
