    Area of Science:

    • Rehabilitation Medicine
    • Public Health
    • Disability Studies

    Background:

    • The Queen Alia Fund registered disabled individuals in Jordan in 1978.
    • A significant number of amputees were identified, necessitating further investigation into their condition.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the condition of amputees registered in the East Bank of Jordan.
    • To explore the nature, causes, and rehabilitation status of amputees.

    Main Methods:

    • A random sample of 100 amputees was selected from a total of 696 registered individuals.
    • Data collected included disability details, rehabilitation received, and functional capability.

    Main Results:

    • Mine explosions and road accidents were the leading causes of amputation.
    • Only 32 amputees received physical rehabilitation, and 56 were recommended for prosthesis.
    • Vocational rehabilitation was received by only 9 patients.
    • A notable increase in amputations occurred from the 1960s to the 1970s, with road accidents being a major contributor.
    • Males and educated individuals showed higher prosthesis utilization compared to females and illiterate persons.

    Conclusions:

    • Vocational rehabilitation is a critical, yet underdeveloped, component in the management of amputees.
    • Increased focus on vocational rehabilitation is essential for comprehensive amputee care and improved functional outcomes.
