    Background:

    • Renal biopsies are crucial for diagnosing kidney diseases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence, composition, and location of concretions in renal biopsies.
    • To explore the potential role of nephrotic syndrome and sclerotic processes in concretion formation.

    Main Methods:

    • Electron microscopy was used to examine 196 renal biopsies.
    • X-ray microanalysis (Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis - EDAX) was employed to determine the elemental composition of detected concretions.

    • Concretions were identified in 78 out of 196 cases.
    • X-ray microanalysis confirmed these concretions to be calcium phosphate deposits.
    • Concretions were consistently found within damaged basement membranes, notably in Bowman's capsules and proximal convoluted tubules.

    • Nephrotic syndrome, associated with hypercholesterolemia, and progressive renal sclerosis are implicated in the pathogenesis of these deposits.
    • The study suggests that these concretions represent an early stage of dystrophic calcification in the kidney.
