[Renal angiomyolipoma in computer tomography].

    Summary

Renal angiomyolipomas are rare benign tumors that can mimic kidney cancer or polycystic kidney disease. High-fat content aids detection via CT, enabling non-surgical diagnosis and potentially avoiding kidney removal.

    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology
    • Radiology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are uncommon benign renal neoplasms.
    • They can present unilaterally, mimicking renal cell carcinoma, or bilaterally, resembling polycystic kidney disease.

    Observation:

    • Unilateral, solitary AMLs often exhibit features suggestive of renal cell carcinoma.
    • Bilateral, multiple AMLs can present as diffuse lesions mimicking polycystic kidneys.

    Findings:

    • Computed tomography (CT) effectively detects AMLs with significant fat content.
    • Preoperative diagnosis is feasible, particularly for fat-rich lesions.

    Implications:

    • Accurate preoperative diagnosis of renal angiomyolipoma can prevent unnecessary nephrectomy.
    • Distinguishing AMLs from malignant renal masses impacts patient management and surgical planning.
