[Transferrin in various hematological syndrome].

M Gepner-Woźniewska, E Sitarska, W Kluciński

    Acta Haematologica Polonica
    |January 1, 1977

    Summary

Serum transferrin levels were measured in patients with hematological syndromes. Only sideropenic anemia patients showed increased transferrin; others had decreased levels, suggesting other iron-binding proteins may be present.

    Area of Science:

    • Hematology
    • Biochemistry

    Context:

    • Serum transferrin is a key protein in iron metabolism.
    • Hematological syndromes can affect iron status and protein levels.

    Purpose:

    • To quantify serum transferrin levels in patients with various hematological syndromes.
    • To correlate transferrin levels with iron status and other serum proteins.
    • To investigate potential non-transferrin iron-binding proteins.

    Summary:

    • Serum transferrin was measured using radial immunodiffusion in 100 patients and 22 healthy controls.
    • A significant increase in transferrin was observed exclusively in patients with sideropenic anemia.
    • Other patient groups exhibited decreased transferrin levels, irrespective of iron metabolism or iron concentration.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Total iron-binding capacity exceeded transferrin levels, suggesting the presence of additional iron-binding proteins.
  • Impact:

    • Provides insights into transferrin's role in different hematological conditions.
    • Highlights the potential presence of uncharacterized iron-binding proteins.
    • Informs diagnostic approaches for iron metabolism disorders.
