    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system.
    • Hypertrophic neuropathy is a rare condition characterized by nerve thickening.

    Observation:

    • A 62-year-old male patient with a known diagnosis of multiple sclerosis underwent postmortem examination.
    • The examination revealed clinically unsuspected findings of hypertrophic neuropathy.

    Findings:

    • The patient's brain and spinal cord showed typical plaques associated with multiple sclerosis.
    • Microscopic examination revealed thickened spinal roots with characteristic onion-bulb changes, indicative of hypertrophic neuropathy.
    • This represents the eleventh reported instance of sporadic hypertrophic neuropathy co-occurring with multiple sclerosis.

    Implications:

    • Highlights the potential for co-occurrence of seemingly unrelated neurological conditions.
    • Suggests the need for comprehensive postmortem analysis in complex neurological cases.
    • Contributes to the understanding of rare neurological disease associations.
