    Summary

Acute pericarditis with effusion can occur six weeks after chest irradiation for breast cancer. Corticosteroid therapy led to rapid improvement and no recurrence during four years of follow-up.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Oncology
    • Radiotherapy

    Background:

    • Chest irradiation is a common treatment for bilateral breast cancer.
    • Radiation-induced heart disease is a known complication, but early pericarditis is less common.

    Observation:

    • A patient developed acute pericarditis with effusion six weeks post-chest irradiation for bilateral breast cancer.
    • The patient presented with symptoms suggestive of cardiac tamponade.

    Findings:

    • Oral corticosteroid therapy resulted in rapid clinical improvement.
    • A significant decrease in cardiac silhouette and resolution of pericardial effusion were observed.
    • No recurrence of pericardial effusion was noted during a four-year follow-up period.

    Implications:

    • Acute pericarditis with effusion is a potential early complication of chest irradiation for breast cancer.
    • Corticosteroids appear to be an effective treatment for this condition.
    • This case highlights the importance of monitoring for cardiac complications after radiotherapy.
