    Summary

    D & C Yellow No. 11, a quinoline dye, caused delayed hypersensitivity reactions in human volunteers at 10-20 ppm. D & C Yellow No. 10 did not induce reactions, even at 1,000 ppm, suggesting it is a safer alternative.

    Background:

    • Quinoline dyes are used in cosmetics and personal care products.
    • Assessing the potential for allergic contact dermatitis from cosmetic ingredients is crucial for consumer safety.

    Observation:

    • Repeat insult patch testing was conducted on two quinoline dyes: D & C Yellow No. 10 (Acid Yellow No. 3) and D & C Yellow No. 11 (Solvent Yellow No. 33).
    • Human volunteers were exposed to varying concentrations of these dyes to evaluate delayed hypersensitivity reactions.

    Findings:

    • D & C Yellow No. 10 did not induce delayed contact hypersensitivity at concentrations up to 1,000 ppm.
    • D & C Yellow No. 11 induced delayed hypersensitivity reactions at concentrations of 10 ppm and 20 ppm.
    • No definitive hypersensitivity was observed with D & C Yellow No. 11 at 5 ppm.

    Implications:

    • D & C Yellow No. 11 poses a risk of allergic contact dermatitis at concentrations found in some consumer products.
    • D & C Yellow No. 10 appears to be a safer alternative to D & C Yellow No. 11, as evidenced by the lack of hypersensitivity reactions.
    • These findings support the reformulation of products to minimize consumer exposure to allergenic dyes.
