    Summary

This study observed complement activation during thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) episodes. Complement levels normalized with clinical remission, suggesting its role in TTP.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Hematology

    Background:

    • Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare hematologic disorder.
    • Recurrent TTP poses significant clinical challenges.

    Observation:

    • Complement activation was noted during acute TTP episodes in a patient.
    • Reduced levels of C3, C4, and CH50 were observed.
    • C3 deposition was detected on red blood cells and platelets.

    Findings:

    • Complement system activation correlates with TTP exacerbations.
    • Complement levels and deposition patterns normalize during remission.

    Implications:

    • Complement activation may play a role in the pathogenesis of TTP.
    • Targeting the complement system could be a therapeutic strategy for TTP.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise mechanisms of complement involvement in TTP.
