Percutaneous nephrostomy. Aspects on applications and technique.

S Hellsten, J Hildell, D Link

    European Urology
    |January 1, 1978

    Summary

Percutaneous nephrostomy offers an effective alternative to surgical drainage for ureteral obstruction. This minimally invasive procedure, guided by imaging, showed manageable bleeding complications, suggesting its utility for non-emergency cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Interventional Radiology

    Background:

    • Ureteral obstruction, often due to malignancy, necessitates effective urinary drainage.
    • Traditional operative nephrostomy can be invasive and carries associated risks.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of percutaneous nephrostomy for urinary drainage.
    • To assess complications associated with the procedure.

    Main Methods:

    • Percutaneous nephrostomy performed in 32 patients (8 permanent, 24 temporary drainage).
    • Renal pelvis puncture guided by fluoroscopy and/or ultrasound.
    • Seldinger technique used for catheter exchange.

    Main Results:

    • The most common indication was distal ureteral obstruction from malignancy.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Bleeding complications occurred in 5 patients, primarily during catheter repositioning or exchange.
  • Ultrasound and specialized catheters may improve outcomes.
  • Conclusions:

    • Percutaneous nephrostomy is a viable alternative to operative nephrostomy, even for non-emergency indications.
    • Routine use of ultrasound and advanced catheter designs can enhance safety and effectiveness.
