    Summary

Spontaneous lymphocytic thyroiditis is common in BB Wistar diabetic rats, affecting over 60%. This autoimmune condition, linked to diabetes onset, also impacts the thyroid gland beyond the pancreas.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Immunology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Spontaneous lymphocytic thyroiditis is a recognized condition in BB Wistar rats.
    • Diabetes mellitus in BB Wistar rats is associated with insulitis, an autoimmune pancreatic manifestation.
    • The relationship between diabetes and thyroiditis in this model requires further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the incidence and characteristics of lymphocytic thyroiditis in BB Wistar diabetic rats.
    • To determine the correlation between pancreatic insulitis and thyroiditis.
    • To explore the potential for systemic autoimmune involvement during diabetes onset.

    Main Methods:

    • Necropsy examination of BB Wistar rats.
    • Histopathological analysis of thyroid and pancreatic tissues.
    • Correlation of thyroiditis severity with diabetes status and age.

    Main Results:

    • A high incidence of lymphocytic thyroiditis was observed in diabetic rats (63.2%) compared to nondiabetic siblings (42.1%).
    • Thyroiditis incidence decreased with age and longer diabetes duration.
    • All rats with pancreatic insulitis exhibited thyroiditis, with more severe lesions in those with insulitis.

    Conclusions:

    • BB Wistar rats are prone to autoimmune thyroiditis, particularly in the context of diabetes.
    • The presence of insulitis suggests a broader autoimmune process affecting multiple organs at diabetes onset.
    • These findings highlight the utility of BB Wistar rats for studying autoimmune diseases involving both pancreas and thyroid.
