    Summary

    Thyrotoxicosis, particularly elevated triiodothyronine, reduces radius bone mineral content. Calcitonin levels and bone response to calcium loading are normal in Graves' disease, suggesting calcitonin secretion is not linked to bone abnormalities.

    Background:

    • Thyrotoxicosis is associated with reduced bone mineral density.
    • The role of calcitonin in the bone abnormalities of thyrotoxicosis remains unclear.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between thyrotoxicosis, serum calcitonin levels, and bone mineral content.
    • To assess calcitonin secretion and response to calcium loading in patients with Graves' disease and subacute thyroiditis.

    Main Methods:

    • Measurement of radius mineral content in thyrotoxic and euthyroid women.
    • Assay of basal serum calcitonin levels.
    • Intravenous calcium loading test to evaluate calcitonin and calcium responses.

    Main Results:

    • Radius mineral content was lower in thyrotoxic women, especially with high triiodothyronine.
    • Basal serum calcitonin levels and calcium-induced calcitonin release were normal in Graves' disease.
    • Serum calcitonin levels decreased acutely in hyperthyroidism after radioiodine therapy.

    Conclusions:

    • Calcitonin reserves are normal in Graves' disease; bone abnormalities are not due to altered calcitonin secretion.
    • Radioiodine therapy in hyperthyroidism may impair calcitonin production due to parafollicular cell radiosensitivity.
